Avoiding acne triggers

The common assumption is that acne is something you get as a teenager, almost as a rite of passage into adulthood.

But the reality is it can happen to people of any age, and it isn’t unusual for adults to be affected too.

In fact, 95 per cent of people will suffer from acne of some description between the ages of 11 and 30.

It’s usually found on the face, back or chest, and in some cases can cause pain and issues with self-esteem.

Easy steps to help your skin

Thankfully there are many things you can do to control acne or make it go away altogether.

It may be counter-intuitive, but over-washing an area of acne can make things worse. Instead, be sure not to wash a spotty area more than twice a day while it remains red and irritated.

When washing, don’t use very hot or very cold water – even if it feels soothing or pleasant at the time. Lukewarm water should be used, along with a mild soap or cream.

And don’t attempt to remove them yourself, either by picking at them or popping them. This will only make the spot come back worse, and may even lead to scarring.

Don’t cover them up

The obvious temptation is to disguise acne with make-up or cosmetics, especially if you have a big occasion coming up. But that will only block the skin pores and delay the recovery of that part of your face.

If you have used some make-up, be sure to remove it thoroughly before going to bed.

Is there a cure?

There may not be a cure for acne, but the chances are it will disappear by itself, and there are many creams and lotions to help ease the process in the meantime.

Like all health issues, a good diet and regular exercise are recommended.

Activity may not reduce acne in itself – but it will improve your overall wellbeing and self-esteem, meaning you’re far better placed to cope with some of the emotional challenges that come with suffering from acne.

Just be sure to shower immediately after, as sweat is known to irritate patches of acne.
