About Omeprazole
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor which is used in the treatment of indigestion and gastroesophageal reflux disease, more commonly known as acid reflux. It is the generic form of the well-known drug Losec. The most common alternative is ranitidine which is an histamine-2 blocker.

Omeprazole works by acting on cells in the stomach causing them to release less gastric acid which in turn reduces symptoms.

Taking Omeprazole
Omeprazole is generally prescribed as a once-daily dose, often taken in the morning. For more severe cases of acid reflux, your doctor may prescribe a twice-daily dosage.

It can be taken with or without food

Note: this medication should be taken for a maximum of 4-5 days. If symptoms persist after this time, please see your GP, as the symptoms require investigation. Acid reflux medications can mask the symptoms of more serious conditions, such as oesophagal cancer.
