Ear Wax

A build-up of earwax could have a significant impact on your hearing and balance. Ear wax can be relatively innocuous, but in some cases it can have a real impact on your quality of life.

An estimated 2.3M people in the UK suffer with ear wax problems annually. This figure is probably higher since many people tend to ignore ear wax problems and it is commonly more likely to affect older adults.

If you are suffering with a build-up of ear wax, a simple procedure to have your wax removed could improve your hearing ability almost immediately.

Procedures such as micro-suction are the most painless, as there is no water being ‘squirted’ into your ear, like some other methods. It involves a low-pressure suction probe being inserted into the ear which will remove excess wax and debris.

Overview

Your ears are self-cleaning, meaning that if your ears produce a normal amount of ear wax, you may not need to have it removed.

However, if your ears produce too much ear wax, it can build-up and become impacted. This can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as:

  • A fullness in your ear
  • Tinnitus (a ringing sound in your ears)
  • Earache
  • Hearing loss

Causes

  • Ear wax can build up if:
  • You have narrow or damaged ear canals
  • You have lost of hair in your ear canals
  • You have a skin condition affecting your scalp or around your ear
  • You have inflammation of your ear canal (otitis externa or “swimmer’s ear

Note that you cannot prevent ear wax, it protects your ears from dirt & germs. Eardrops can help soften the wax and will help to allow the wax to fall out of it’s own accord and prevent further blockages.

Symptoms

Changes in your hearing may be a sign of wax build-up, but they can also be a sign of hearing loss. The most common symptoms for ear wax however are:

  • You are having difficulty following conversations
  • Phone conversations may be unclear
  • It sounds like people are mumbling when they are talking to you
  • Difficulty locating sounds
  • Signs of tinnitus (experiencing a ringing or buzzing sound in your ears)
  • Loud TV or Music (your friends of family say you have the volume up too high)
