Overview

According to the Health Survey for England, 62.1% of all adults in the UK are overweight. Being overweight comes with many health problems including diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure and certain types of cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight can improve your general health and also reduces the risk of further complications later in life.

To lose weight, a healthy diet must be eaten. A balanced diet should include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, proteins such as lean meats, fish or lentils, and starchy foods or foods high in fibre. You should limit intake of soft drinks and fruit juice as they often contain lots of calories and sugar.

A healthy intake of calories a day is dependent on many different factors for each person, such as their height, physical activity and gender. It is estimated that women should eat an average of 2000 calories a day whereas men should eat an average of 2500 calories.

About Orlistat

Orlistat, which also comes in the brand names Xenical or Beacita, works by preventing the absorption of fat from the food you’ve eaten.

You take one capsule three times daily with each of your three main meals. If you miss a meal or the meal contains no fat then you should skip your dose of Orlistat.

Orlistat should only be used by people with a BMI of 30 or over, or by someone with a BMI of 28-30 who also has diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Treatment should be stopped after 12 weeks if you’ve not managed to lose at least 5% of your starting body weight.

About Saxenda

Saxenda contains the drug Liraglutide. It comes as a subcutaneous injection meaning it needs to be injected beneath your skin. The drug, which is also used in diabetes, works by stimulating receptors in your body that reduce your appetite leading to weight loss.

Following the written instructions, inject a starting dose of 0.6mg daily for the first week. You should then increase the dose by 0.6mg each week until you reach a maintenance dose of 3mg daily.  You can inject Saxenda at any time of the day but it should ideally be at the same time every day.  It should be injected under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. You can alternate between injection sites each day to minimise skin irritation. Each needle should only be used once and must be carefully discarded in a yellow sharps bin after use.

Sharps bins are classed as clinical waste and must not be disposed of with your household waste. You should contact your local council to find out how and where to dispose of sharps bins in your area.

https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/accidents-first-aid-and-treatments/how-should-i-dispose-of-used-needles-or-sharps/

You will need to buy Novofine or Novotwist 6mm/31G Needles and a yellow sharps bin for needle disposal separately. 8mm/32G needles can be used if the 6mm/31G needles are too small for the thickness of your skin.

Saxenda should only be used by people with a BMI over 30 or by people with a BMI of 27-30 who also have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea. Treatment should be stopped after 12 weeks if you’ve not managed to lose at least 5% of your starting body weight.
