FAQ

Which cleanser is right for you?

Follow CeraVe's simple guide to choosing a cleanser suited to your skin type and concerns.

Cleansing should be the first step in your skincare routine, used to remove makeup, impurities and debris from the pores. The type of cleanser you use is crucial to getting this step right, and over-stripping the skin with ingredients that are too harsh or drying can damage the skin’s protective barrier - and actually create skin concerns rather than solving them.

To help you find the right cleanser for you, we’ve created a simple guide that explains the four main skin types and the formulas that work best to care for your skin.

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser - Best for: Normal to dry skin
Normal to dry skin types need a cleanser that is both hydrating and gentle, such as CeraVe’s Hydrating Cleanser. This soothing cleanser is specifically formulated for sensitive facial skin that is prone to irritation and even eczema. As with all CeraVe formulas, it contains three essential ceramides to help protect the natural skin barrier (responsible for blocking harmful irritants) and hyaluronic acid to attract and retain moisture on the skin. Use it every morning and evening and follow with your usual serum and moisturiser.

CeraVe Smoothing Cleanser - Best for: Rough and bumpy skin and Keratosis Pilaris (a very common harmless condition where small bumps appear on your skin. It can last for a long time, but there are treatments that may improve your skin.

If you have rough bumpy skin on your face and body, you may need a cleanser that hydrates and exfoliates at the same time. CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser does this with a formula enriched with exfoliating salicylic acid, three essential ceramides and hydrating hyaluronic acid. When used each morning and evening, this cleanser gently removes oil, dirt and makeup from the skin and can also be used on skin suffering from Keratosis Pilaris.

CeraVe Cream to Foam Cleanser - Best for: Dry skin

If you have a dry skin type, you need a cleanser that doesn’t strip or damage the skin. One of the latest innovations is CeraVe’s cream-to-foam cleanser that is formulated to effectively remove makeup, oils, and dirts but without leaving the face feeling tight. It does this with an efficacious formula that features an amino-acid surfactant to remove dirt and oil alongside a powerful combination of amino acids, hyaluronic acid and three essential ceramides that attract and retain water on the skin and protect the skin’s natural barrier.

Foaming Cleanser- Best for: Combination and oily skin types
Combination skin types are more prone to discomfort and imperfections so require a cleanser that soaks up oil without drying the skin out. CeraVe’s Foaming Cleanser is recommended by dermatologists due to the way it gently cleanses sensitive skin with a refreshing foam action and calms the skin with the B3 vitamin, niacinamide. This foaming action negates the need for double cleansing which can actually damage the barrier function and cause redness, irritation and dryness.

CeraVe Hydrating Foaming Foaming Oil Cleanser - Best for: Normal to Very Dry Skin (Also for Baby & Atopic-Prone Skin)

Cleanses, hydrates and soothes the skin without disrupting the skin barrier.

Use the chosen CeraVe cleanser every morning and evening, and pair with CeraVe’s Serums to lift your skin and AM and PM Facial Moisturising Lotion to hydrate your skin all day long.

How to protect your great protector – your skin barrier

Your skin has a tough job, especially your uppermost layer, the skin barrier, which is your first line of defence from environmental aggressors such as UV exposure and pollution. If it’s compromised or weakened, you may find it becomes irritated or sensitive.

Why your skin’s barrier is important

At its healthiest and best, your skin barrier will retain water, locking in hydration, while also defending your body from environmental threats. It’s made up of lipids (oils) and fats, including ceramides, and when these become low your skin’s barrier function can be weakened, compromising its ability to retain water and causing your skin to look dry and dull. Chemicals can also penetrate it, increasing your skin’s sensitivity and often causing inflammation and redness. Stocking up on ceramide-rich products could however be the answer.

What products can help to keep it healthy

All CeraVe skincare products are enriched with a blend of three essential ceramides (ceramides 1, 3 and 6-II), along with fatty acids and other lipids, to help replenish the skin’s existing ceramides and strengthen its barrier function. To keep your skin’s surface clear of dirt, dust and excess oil without stripping it of moisture or causing any damage, use a gentle cleanser rather than an abrasive scrub.

CeraVe Cleansers - contains an amino acid-based surfactant that helps to cleanse the skin while replenishing the skin’s Natural Moisturising Factor. They are a rich, dense cream or light oil/gel to foam that feels elegant and cleans effectively.

The foaming mechanism helps to lift dirt and oil more effectively; however, the use of a gentle surfactant leaves the skin hydrated not stripped. Stripping skincare can disrupt the skin barrier function, whilst this formulation helps to support it for healthy skin.
