What is Fungal Nail Infection

Fungal nail infection is a common issue, and more likely to occur as we get older or following a nail injury.

A fungal nail infection can be uncomfortable, painful and also frustrating. It leaves the nail looking unattractive, which can make you self-conscious about the appearance of your feet. Fungal nail infections are a common problem that can affect any nail. The reason toenails are most commonly affected is that feet generally provide the environment needed for the fungi to breed and grow.

Infection occurs due to the overgrowth of fungi under, or on the surface of the nail. Spores of a fungus make their way between your toenail and the skin underneath the nail bed and feed off the skin or the keratin in the nail. Although not usually serious, the condition can be unpleasant as nails become discoloured, thickened and distorted.

TOP TIPS FOR AVOIDING AND MANAGING FUNGAL NAIL

You can help protect against fungal nail infections from occurring by:

  • Treat any fungal infection you have, like athlete’s foot, as it can cause a nail infection.
  • Wearing flip flops in public places. Avoid walking around barefoot in public pools, showers and locker rooms.
  • Avoiding towel, sock and shoe sharing. Disinfect your shoes regularly with an antifungal shoe spray or powder.
  • Replacing any old footwear that has been contaminated with fungus.
    Wearing clean socks every day.
Avoiding shoes that make your feet hot and sweaty.
  • Not sharing nail clippers or scissors. Regularly check your nails and ensure they are trimmed carefully and regularly. Always make sure your nail clipper is disinfected.
  • Keep your feet clean and dry.

Please see a GP or Podiatrist if your fungal nail infection is severe and treatment hasn't worked or if it has spread to other nails. If you have diabetes or any circulatory problems please speak to a Healthcare Professional before self treating.

FAQ

WHAT IS FUNGAL NAIL?

Although fungal nail infections are common and generally harmless, they can be unpleasant and can take a long time to treat. Fungal nail infection occurs from a particular type of fungus in, under, or around the nail and can follow a fungal skin infection.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF FUNGAL NAIL?

Infections usually start at the edge of the nail and appear as discoloured white and yellow streaks or flaky white patches on toenails. The streaks often spread to the centre, discolouring more of the nail. In severe cases it can cause the nail to lift away from the skin. Finally, the nail can become brittle and crumble away, causing pain and swelling to the surrounding skin and nail.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOM TRIGGERS?

As fungus often thrives in moist, dark and warm conditions, wearing trainers or shoes that make feet hot and sweaty for long periods of time makes the risk of infection higher. Fungal nail infections are also contagious and can spread in communal areas such as gyms and pools.

WHAT CAUSES FUNGAL NAIL?

You are more likely to get a fungal nail infection if you:

  • Fail to keep your feet clean and dry.
  • Wear shoes that make your feet hot and sweaty.
  • Walk around barefoot in communal areas such as changing rooms and pools.
  • Have damaged your nails (they are more likely to become infected).
  • Have had another form of fungal infection that can spread, e.g. athlete’s foot.
  • Have another condition like diabetes or psoriasis that weakens the immune system.
  • Live in a hot or humid climate.

Spotting a fungal nail infection

Here are some signs of fungal nail infection to look out for:

  • Your nails start to look dull, and lose their natural shine
  • There is discolouration around the edge of the nail
  • White or yellowish spots in the middle of the nail
  • A thickening or brittleness of the nail
  • The nail crumbling and splitting, and even separating from the skin
  • Discomfort while wearing shoes, walking, or standing for a time

It’s important to act quickly if you notice any of these symptoms. If you don’t treat the infection, there is a chance it will spread to other nails.

How to take care of your feet regularly

  • Washing and drying your feet carefully. Always wash your hands after touching an infected nail.
  • Ensure you are treating any other fungal infections you may have, for example athlete’s foot.
  • Wear shoes that fit properly with enough room for the toes.
  • Keep your nails trimmed. Sterilise the tools used for pedicures by cleaning them thoroughly under hot water or using alcoholic wipes or liquid.

Directions

Always read the instruction leaflet carefully before use.
